Don't stress your monitor . . . . . or strain your eyes!

Monitor enhancements:

Screen resolution, refresh rate, colors depth, temperature, moire, degaussing, recall.

That Monitor

The monitor is often a much neglected or forgotten item of computer hardware even though it is an integral part of computer use.

You can enhance you computer experience by configuring it properly for the best visual quality possible. Just a little effort is worthwhile.

Screen Geometry

The options available depend on the make/model of you monitor.

Center your screen and stretch it out so that it covers the entire viewable area. If the display appears crooked or warped, you may need to use the trapezoidal, pincushion, and tilt properties.

Screen Resolution

Having the optimal screen resolution for your monitor will enhance your viewing. If text is too small for you then increase font size without reducing the resolution.

These are the usual resolutions for different screen sizes:
14" 800 x 600
15" 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768
17" 1024 x 768
19" 1152 x 864 or 1280 x 1024
21" 1280 x 1024 or 1600 x 1200v

ALWAYS try to view Web pages at 800x600 resolution, unless requested by the Webmaster to use a higher resolution

Refresh Rate

The optimal Refresh Rate for any given resolution is 75Hz.

Higher than this can degrade picture quality and can stress your monitor. Should you spend very long periods at the computer then you can optionally try a higher refresh rate.

For optimal computer performance use the lowest Refresh Rate compatible with your usage.

Color & Color Depth

In general terms the less you give your monitor (and video card) to do then the faster its performance. However don't be a martyr by using monochrome!

Set the number of colors as low as possible to get the fastest performance. Balance this against efficiency and your viewing comfort. The most basic configuration is 640x480 resolution with 16 colours. Most computer users rightly prefer higher resolutions and at least 256 colours for displaying graphics - your graphics sub-system may be optimized for 256 colours and higher resolutions.

32-bit color depth (True Color) will generally give you a better picture, but you would often sacrifice some performance (games!).

Color Temperature

Color temperature refers to the monitor's value for white. As white contains all the colors in the spectrum, Color Temperature has a noticeable overall effect.

9600K is very close to true white on most monitors and is the popular selection. Know as Cold White it gives the screen a light blue tinge on older monitors.

6500K, less popular, gives everything a slight reddish tinge and is therefore known as Warm White. You may prefer 6500K for games on an older monitor.

Moire:

The majority of users can leave this alone. Moire refers to some types of distortion that may occur with improperly shielded monitors. Moire patterns are wave lines or fuzziness and are created by misalignment of the cathode ray.

Degaussing:

When you switch on the monitor you can hear a vibrating surge - this is voltage being sent through a coiled wire around the tube. Think of it as an anti-static surge (not quite true, but similar).
The Degaussing option enables this during power-on. It may clear up any problems you encounter after extended use (discoloration, flickering, etc.).
